Strengthening Support Ecosystems for Digital Democracy
Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) have emerged as key players in the digital democracy movement, utilising technology to empower citizens, hold governments accountable, and build stronger civic communities. However, not everyone experiences the promise of digital democracy equally.
Expectation State was commissioned by CIVICUS to develop and create case studies that strengthen support ecosystems for digital democracy in countries characterised by obstructed, repressed, or closed civic spaces; specifically in Egypt, Uganda and Côte d’Ivoire.
Through literature reviews, stakeholder interviews, and data analysis, the project developed case studies that:
- Examined the challenges faced by CSOs in navigating digital repression;
- Identified existing support mechanisms that help CSOs operate in restrictive environments;
- Highlighted successful strategies for promoting digital democracy; and
- Provided tailored recommendations to enhance CSO resilience and foster innovation.
